Kenya buying guide: MT-09, MT-03, XTZ150, scooter and YZ85

Choose the riding job, identify the actual model, inspect condition and confirm Kenyan support. Treat youth motocross as its own ownership project rather than a commuter purchase.

Kenya buying guide: MT-09, MT-03, XTZ150, 125 cc scooter and YZ85

Begin by deciding whether you need a public-road motorcycle or a specialist motocross machine. Then identify the exact bike. This general-information guide covers model families; the episode's production years, individual equipment and unnamed scooter model are unconfirmed. Foreign reference specifications do not replace the documentation for the machine you will buy.

Make a route-based shortlist

Record your weekly kilometres, road surfaces, passenger use, luggage needs and parking arrangements. Include your riding experience and access to instruction. A performance-focused street bike, a smaller road bike, a dual-purpose model, an urban scooter and a youth motocross machine solve different problems. Comparing their engine sizes without identifying the problem leads to a poor shortlist.

For the MT-09, ask whether you specifically want its performance class and can support the riding and ownership demands. For the MT-03, assess fit and everyday usefulness rather than assuming the smaller capacity suits every new rider. For the XTZ150, examine the actual rough sections of your regular route and the bike's tyres and suspension. For the scooter, confirm the model before promising convenience or storage. For the YZ85, plan a suitable supervised course and a rider-development programme.

Reserve money for gear, insurance where appropriate, inspection, immediate repairs and training. The maximum advert price you can afford is not necessarily the maximum purchase price that leaves you able to own the bike responsibly.

Confirm model, year and ownership

Match the chassis and engine identifiers to the ownership records. Confirm the seller can transfer the motorcycle and use the proper transfer process before handing over the full purchase sum. If first registration, production year and advertised year differ, obtain a written explanation. Check any finance interest or other restriction through the relevant ownership channels.

Get the factory model code and the correct manual. An earlier MT-09 should not receive the 890 cc figures simply because CFAO's current listing uses them. The US 2025 MT-03 reference describes one labelled build, not every imported example. The El Salvador XTZ150 page likewise cannot establish the actual Kenyan bike's fuel system or brakes without identity matching.

For the scooter, ask for the complete model name, code and year. CFAO lists RayZR 110 and RayZR 125 locally, but those catalogue entries do not identify the unnamed scooter. For the YZ85, establish whether it is the standard model or a different wheel configuration. Yamaha's US 2025 standard YZ85 specifications should not be mixed with the separate large-wheel variant.

Inspect the road bikes on their own merits

See the bike cold and have an independent technician assess starting, fluids, leaks, charging and warning lights. Where fitted, inspect the cooling system and fuel-injection operation. Look for damage or repairs around steering stops, controls, covers and structural areas. Replacement panels can be cosmetic; ask why they were replaced and let the inspection determine their significance.

Check tyres for age, damage, wear and correct fitment. Inspect wheels, bearings, brakes, fork seals, rear suspension and chain drive where fitted. Compare the remaining condition with a quote for the work needed. Avoid accepting a fresh wash and polished exhaust as evidence of mechanical care.

For an insured, legal test ride, assess normal control response, stable tracking, brake operation and comfort. Practise the low-speed manoeuvres your parking space requires. Check whether a passenger or the luggage you intend to carry can be accommodated within the actual load limit. Ask a technician to investigate unusual noises or behaviour instead of relying on a seller's explanation alone.

Give the XTZ150 and scooter route-specific checks

For the XTZ150, examine suspension, wheel alignment, bearings and steering carefully, especially if the seller describes frequent rough-road use. Inspect tyre suitability for your mixture of surfaces rather than assuming an aggressive-looking tread is automatically right. Obtain the correct load limit, and assess luggage mounting and passenger fit before making it a regular two-person tool.

For the scooter, physically test the storage you care about: a compartment claim does not establish that your particular helmet or work bag fits. Check wheel and tyre condition, ground clearance in your actual access environment and safe luggage arrangements. Establish the transmission type and ask for the matching maintenance history. Belt, clutch or final-drive work should follow the correct manual, with a written cost estimate when due.

Treat the YZ85 as a separate purchase project

Arrange an inspection by someone familiar with this competition model. Ask about engine work, hours or usage records if kept, suspension servicing and replaced parts. Obtain the correct fuel and lubrication instructions and service requirements; do not invent a universal premix ratio from the two-stroke label.

Match the rider's size and experience to the actual motorcycle with competent instruction. Budget for a suitable riding venue, coaching, protective equipment, transport and maintenance. The purchase price is only one line in that plan. A small engine capacity does not establish that a motocross bike is an easy learner's commuter.

Verify any public-road registration and homologation claim from actual documents. Until that is established, plan for closed-course use and appropriate transport. A motocross machine's technical purpose must not be confused with permission to ride it through ordinary traffic.

Obtain local support and prices in writing

Yamaha's global distributor directory identifies CFAO Mobility Kenya, and CFAO's FAQ describes a branches-and-dealers supply route for Yamaha products and spares. Enquire with the actual model code and year. Ask for routine service parts, model-specific items, labour rates, stock position and expected delivery time. That enquiry is particularly important for older imports or competition parts.

No verified selling price is assigned to these exact bikes. Request dated new-bike quotations identifying equipment, warranty conditions and authorised service arrangements. For used examples, compare like-for-like year, specification and condition. Add immediate work identified by the inspection instead of treating the lowest asking price as the best value.

Do not apply a distributor's car warranty to a motorcycle. Get the motorcycle-specific document and establish which service conditions preserve coverage. When a seller claims transferable warranty, verify eligibility before assigning value to it.

Build the first-year budget

Include transfer and registration costs where applicable, appropriate insurance, protective gear, independent inspection, servicing, tyres, final-drive consumables, parking and any training. Keep optional accessories separate from necessary repairs. For the motocross purchase, add venue, coaching and transport costs rather than presenting road registration costs as though they necessarily apply.

Calculate fuel with the applicable petrol price: monthly kilometres × litres per 100 km ÷ 100 × shillings per litre. Use several realistic scenarios and update them with your own records. Another rider's figures and foreign test-cycle data are reference points, not a guarantee for Nairobi traffic, passenger use or your route.

For ordinary road riding, the Traffic Act section 103B requires a valid rider licence, third-party insurance and helmets plus reflective jackets for rider and passenger; it allows only one passenger. Confirm the insurance use category and any additional commercial-use requirements with the relevant authorities. Buy once the identity, condition, support and total budget fit the actual riding job.
